Radon Testing

Why Radon Testing Matters

Because radon is tasteless, odorless, and invisible, this radioactive gas is a hidden threat in homes and businesses throughout the United States. There is no geographical area in the U.S. that is exempt from radon exposure, so the only way to know if your home or business has dangerous levels of radon is to test for it.

Radon testing is so critical because of the significant health risks radon exposure presents. According to the EPA, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer among the general public and the first leading cause among nonsmokers.  Learn more about radon from the EPA.

Green Earth Remediation can help you gain peace of mind or understand the next steps necessary for radon mitigation with reliable radon testing services for residential and commercial clients.

How Often Should You Test for Radon?

Radon levels fluctuate through time, so testing just once is not sufficient for assessing your risk of exposure. Homes and businesses should be tested once every 5 years.

When to Test for Radon

Additionally, you should test for radon under the following circumstances:

  • When new occupants are moving into the space.
  • After significant alterations during a remodel or building addition.
  • When the ventilation, insulation, or HVAC system is installed, altered, or repaired.
  • When the structure is being weatherized.

The Importance of Regular Testing

Regular testing for radon is essential for maintaining safe radon levels in your home. Periodic testing ensures that any changes in radon levels are detected early, allowing for timely intervention and safety measures.

Why Radon Levels Might Change Even with a Mitigation System

While radon mitigation systems are highly effective, several factors can cause changes in radon levels over time:

Structural Changes

  • Building Settling: Over time, buildings naturally settle, which can create new cracks or openings in the foundation, allowing more radon to enter.
  • Renovations: Remodeling projects, such as adding new rooms, changing HVAC systems, or altering the building’s structure, can affect radon levels.

Environmental Factors

  • Weather Conditions: Heavy rains, snow, and other weather conditions can influence soil moisture and radon levels. For instance, saturated soil can increase radon concentration in the ground air.
  • Seasonal Variations: Radon levels can fluctuate with the seasons, often higher in the winter when homes are sealed tight against the cold, trapping radon indoors.

System Wear and Tear

  • System Maintenance: Like any mechanical system, radon mitigation systems require regular maintenance to function optimally. Components like fans can wear out over time and may need replacement.
  • Blockages: The vent pipes used in mitigation systems can sometimes become blocked or damaged, reducing their effectiveness.

Ground Shifts

  • Natural Changes: Earthquakes, mining activities, and other geological events can shift the ground, altering the pathways through which radon travels.

Ensuring Continued Safety

To ensure that your mitigation system continues to protect you from radon, it’s important to:

  • Schedule regular inspections and maintenance of the mitigation system.
  • Retest radon levels periodically, even after a system is installed, to confirm its ongoing effectiveness.
  • Be vigilant about structural changes and repair any new cracks or openings in the foundation promptly.

Types of Radon Testing

There are various types of radon testing, including short and long-term tests. Short-term tests measure radon over a brief period, as little as 48 hours. These tests may be performed with passive testing kits purchased at hardware stores, online, or provided for free in certain states. These kits provide instructions for use and are sent to labs for testing.

Alternatively, active testing with continuous radon monitors may be performed by professionals like the technicians at Green Earth Remediation. This will be the fastest and most accurate form of testing available.

Long-term testing may be recommended if short-term passive tests indicate higher levels of radon or if you want to assess your home or business’s risk over an extended period. Radon levels tend to be highest during the winter due to the thermal stack effect—cold temperatures increase pressure within the home, drawing more air from the soil and causing higher levels of radon accumulation.

Green Earth cam and did a Radon Mitigation for our house after it tested very high. The price was extremely reasonable, and they got us on the schedule right away. William came out and installed it and did a wonderful job, they were quick and cleaned up after themselves. The best part is they leave a radon testing kit to make sure that the mitigation system is working to their standards. It is so comforting to know they are proving that the system is working and I feel so much better moving my kids into the house knowing we aren't exposing them to high levels anymore. 100% would recommend them to anyone, the follow up and guarantee are the best I found!

Green Earth Radon remediation was professional, quick, and surprisingly less expensive than anticipated. Initial visit was quick and easy, and estimated install cost provided immediately. This was confirmed in writing within a day, so we scheduled - and installation began same week.

Install crew were respectul of our site, left the area clean, and the installation looks professional.

Best news - Radon dropped from consistently in 5-7 pCi/L range to consistently below 0.2 within a couple hours. My personal monitoring has confirmed it's stayed there for a month now.

Quick, Professional, zero fooling around. Very satisfied.

We are selling our home. The inspection company hired by the buyers also did a radon test that showed a value of 155 - ridiculously high for a Michigan home. The inspection company didn't even question the number. Just published it as if it was fact.

Fortunately, when the buyers' agent called Green Earth Remediation to compare rates to install a remediation system, they said the number didn't make any sense. So, they offered to do a retest for free. They easily could have just "accepted" the number, bid the job and possibly installed a system costing thousands. Instead, they came all the way out to retest our home for free.

Their test came back at just over TWO. Not 20, not 200. TWO! - and this what these guys actually do for a living, so I have way more confidence in their number than the one from the inspection service. Now, not only do we not have to worry about an expensive remediation system, I'm honestly still wondering to myself why the inspection company didn't even blink at that 155 value.

At any rate, thank you soooooo much to GER for being willing to come out and do this free of charge. These guys are great, and, the guy that they sent out (I think it was Greg) was terrific. Very personable, but also very professional.

I bought a home a few years back that needed radon mitigation and the system recently started a high pitched hum. William happened to be the technician for both the install and the recent home call. The drop in rate was reasonable, he quickly identified the issue, and swapped out the fan (which was under warranty that he took care of). Everything was back to normal within the hour. William was down to earth and actually remembered the house from a few years back. I almost offered the guy a beer but if I ever see him out at a bar, I'll be sure to get him a round.

Green earth remediation is not the cheapest choice around, but they do have competitive pricing. I did a couple quotes before choosing who to contract for my radon mitigation system I got quotes that were 25-50 dollars cheaper than green earth. After looking at all the examples for the systems each company installed, I decided to go with Green Earth because they are marginally more expensive but more quality work. There mitigation systems are expertly installed and also proven to work by their post tests.

I'm a realtor and my clients had Green Earth Remediation test and put a radon system in their new home. They retested after the system was already put in, the levels were still below what the state suggests, but still too high for Green Earth to accept. With some more tweaking they got the levels down to almost nothing! Super impressed on their dedication to go over and beyond! Because of this, I also used them in my home to test my system after some tweaking was done on my radon system and I also received a very LOW reading! I'll continue to suggest them to my clients in the future! Thank you!

Cannot recommend them enough! We needed a radon mitigation system installed and they were the only local company who actually came out to do a walk through quote. The entire process from scheduling to system install was seamless. Now our levels are almost nonexistent. Thank you for keeping our family safe & giving us peace of mind!

I've now had three radon systems installed with Green Earth and they've done an excellent job each time. Their price was competitive, they were able to get started very fast, and they delivered clear results confirmed via complimentary post-installation testing. When Matt came out to give an estimate he knew exactly what needed to be done despite my project being quite complex. The install team arrived on-time, got right to work and were able to get everything done quicker than I imagined possible. After the install I was amazed when the owner Greg showed up at my door to personally review the post-install test results with me and answer any questions I had. I highly recommend Green Earth for radon mitigation.

I was in the process of selling my house when my radon test came back with a reading close to 40. I immediately called Green Earth, and they made the entire process incredibly easy. They came out quickly, worked around my schedule to provide a quote, and had the system installed just a few days after I gave approval.
My radon levels are now down to 0.6 and safely within the recommended range. I don’t get to enjoy the improvement myself, but I’m glad the home is safe for the new owners. Green Earth was fast, professional, and great to work with—highly recommend!

From the very first meet up with Matt to the final installation nothing but professional. Matt came to my home and we talked about solutions for my high radon levels. In the lower level of my home they averaged 4.8-5.2 .
We set an appointment and on that day the tech's came on time and we talked about the remediation plan as we looked over the inside and outside of me home and where the system would be installed.
Three days in I am averaging 1.0 now !!
I could not be happier with this job.
I have already recommended these guys to two friends.

Best regards,
Dave Howell

Just had a great experience with Green Earth Remediation. Zack drove up in less than ideal weather to honor the appointment, arriving on time. He worked all day to install the radon removal system, and explained things as he went. 24 hours after Zack left, exactly as he said, the radon level dropped. We have a continuous monitor and it has not been back up anywhere near the pre-install levels. Definitely worth the money and peace of mind!

Greg came out and tested my home for radon. He was very friendly, honest and upfront about things. He didn’t talk me into anything I didn’t need. The radon levels weren’t too high so he suggested what I could do to take care of the problem. I would highly recommend them.

We recently bought a home in Grand Haven which tested high in Radon during the home inspections. We contacted Green Earth Remediation and set up an appointment for the day after we moved in. Within a week of that appointment, they were out to our new home installing a remediation system.

They identified a location in the basement that was clear of other utilities and had clearance on the outside of the house to vent above the roofline. It was installed in about 5 hours and has been running like clockwork since.

They were all very professional and knowledgeable and did great work. I highly recommend Green Earth.

Radon Testing FAQs

Radon testing should be performed in homes and businesses every two years. If results are below 4 pCi/L, retesting may occur every 5 years.
It’s a common misconception that radon is only a problem in older homes and buildings. However, radon levels can build up in any indoor space, even if the building is newly constructed or renovated. Before moving in, schedule radon testing to ensure your safety by reducing the risk of radon exposure.
Radon is an invisible, odorless, radioactive gas. The only way to know that indoor radon levels are high in any given space is to perform radon testing. Radon is so dangerous because it is the second most common cause of lung cancer, behind cigarette smoking.
It is possible to test for radon using a DIY radon testing kit purchased online or at a hardware store. These kits are mailed to labs for testing after they have been placed in a home or business for a designated period of time. However, if you need radon testing with rapid results or you want to confirm the results of a self-test kit, calling a professional is recommended.
Short-term radon tests measure radon levels over a period of 2-90 days, while long-term test kits measure radon levels for 90 days or longer. Radon levels fluctuate through time, so the results of a short-term test may not accurately reflect average annual levels of radon in a home or business.
Radon is everywhere, indoors and outdoors. However, indoor spaces can trap radon inside as it breaks down and seeps into homes and buildings via the cracks and holes in the foundation. Any home or building, regardless of its age, location, or size, may have a radon problem. The only way to know for sure is to perform routine radon testing.
Radon levels are not static. They fluctuate due to a variety of environmental conditions, so routine radon testing is necessary to continually manage the risk of radon exposure.
There have been numerous studies both in the U.S. and internationally that have linked radon exposure to an elevated risk of lung cancer. There is no truly safe level of radon, but routine testing and effective mitigation systems can reduce the risk as much as possible.
