Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are small, flying insects known for their irritating bites and ability to spread diseases like West Nile virus, Zika virus, and malaria. They thrive in areas with standing water, such as ponds and puddles. These pests are most active during dawn and dusk.

Habitat: Mosquitoes need standing water to lay their eggs. Common breeding sites include ponds, puddles, and containers like birdbaths, gutters, and discarded containers. Even small amounts of water in plant saucers or old tires can become breeding grounds.

Risks: Besides their itchy bites, mosquitoes pose serious health risks to humans and pets by transmitting various diseases.

Control Methods:

  • Chemical Treatments: Insecticides for adults and larvae.
  • Source Reduction: Eliminating standing water.
  • Biological Controls: Introducing natural predators like fish.

Ticks

Ticks are small, parasitic arachnids that feed on the blood of mammals, birds, and sometimes reptiles. They are commonly found in wooded and grassy areas. These pests can latch onto hosts and remain undetected for long periods.

Habitat: Ticks thrive in wooded and grassy areas where they wait for a host to pass by.

Risks: Ticks can transmit diseases like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, posing significant health risks.

Control Methods:

  • Chemical Treatments: Acaricides to kill ticks.
  • Vegetation Management: Maintaining lawns and yards.
  • Protective Measures: Wearing long sleeves and using tick repellents.

Bedbugs

Bedbugs are small, brownish insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals, often while they sleep. They are typically found in cracks and crevices in and around beds and furniture. Bedbugs are notorious for causing discomfort through their bites.

Habitat: Bedbugs are commonly found in cracks and crevices in and around beds, furniture, and baseboards. They can also hide behind wallpaper, inside electrical outlets, and in luggage, making them difficult to detect and eliminate.

Risks: While not known to spread diseases, bedbugs cause itching and potential allergic reactions through their bites.

Control Methods:

  • Heat Treatments: High temperatures to kill bedbugs.
  • Chemical Treatments: Insecticides application.
  • Physical Removal: Vacuuming and steam cleaning.

Fleas

Fleas are small, flightless insects that feed on the blood of mammals and birds, often infesting pets and homes. They are frequently found in pet bedding, carpets, and furniture. Fleas are known for their ability to jump long distances.

Habitat: Fleas thrive in pet bedding, carpets, and upholstered furniture where they can easily find hosts.

Risks: Fleas can transmit tapeworms and cause allergic reactions in pets and humans, leading to discomfort and health issues.

Control Methods:

  • Chemical Treatments: Flea sprays, powders, and shampoos.
  • Environmental Control: Washing pet bedding and vacuuming.
  • Biological Control: Introducing nematodes that prey on flea larvae.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are resilient insects known for thriving in various environments including our homes. They prefer warm, moist areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Cockroaches can survive in harsh conditions and reproduce quickly.

Habitat: Cockroaches are often found in warm, moist environments such as kitchens, bathrooms, and basements.

Risks: Cockroaches can spread diseases, contaminate food, and trigger allergies and asthma, making them a significant health hazard.

Control Methods:

  • Chemical Treatments: Insecticides and baits.

Effective Pest Prevention Tips for Homes and Businesses

By following these DIY prevention tips, both homeowners and businesses can significantly reduce the risk of pest infestations. Implementing these practices not only protects property and health but also enhances overall pest control efforts.

Residential Pest Control Tips

  • Maintain Cleanliness: Regularly clean your home, especially kitchens and dining areas, to eliminate food sources for pests. Store food in airtight containers and promptly clean up spills and crumbs. Dispose of garbage regularly and use tightly sealed trash bins.
  • Seal Entry Points: Inspect your home for cracks, gaps, and holes, and seal them with caulk or other suitable materials. Install door sweeps and weather stripping on doors and windows to prevent pests from entering. Repair damaged screens on windows and vents.
  • Manage Outdoor Areas: Keep your yard well-maintained by mowing the lawn regularly and trimming bushes and trees away from the house. Remove standing water from flowerpots, gutters, and birdbaths to prevent mosquitoes from breeding. Store firewood and other materials away from the home’s foundation to reduce hiding places for pests.
  • Regular Inspections: Conduct regular inspections of your home, especially in areas where pests are commonly found, such as basements, attics, and crawl spaces. Look for signs of pest activity, such as droppings, gnaw marks, and damaged food packaging. Address any issues immediately to prevent infestations from getting worse.
  • Natural Repellents: Use natural repellents, such as essential oils (e.g., peppermint, lavender, and eucalyptus), to deter pests like ants, spiders, and mosquitoes. Citrus peels can be used to deter ants, while diatomaceous earth can be applied to areas where crawling insects are found. Plant pest-repelling herbs, such as basil, mint, and rosemary, around your home.

Commercial Pest Control Tips

  • Implement Sanitation Protocols: Establish a regular cleaning schedule for all areas of the business, including food preparation areas, break rooms, and restrooms. Ensure that all food is stored properly and that spills are cleaned up immediately. Use pest-proof containers for storing food and ingredients.
  • Regular Maintenance: Conduct routine maintenance checks to identify and repair any structural issues that could allow pests to enter, such as cracks in walls, damaged doors, and broken windows. Keep the exterior of the building well-maintained, including proper drainage to avoid standing water.
  • Employee Training: Train employees on the importance of pest prevention and how to recognize signs of pest activity. Encourage employees to report any sightings of pests or potential entry points immediately.
  • Waste Management: Ensure that waste is managed properly, with regular disposal and the use of sealed containers to prevent attracting pests. Keep dumpsters and trash bins away from the building and ensure they are cleaned regularly.
  • Pest Monitoring: Set up a pest monitoring system with traps and bait stations in strategic locations around the property. Pheromone traps can be used to monitor insect activity, while electronic monitoring systems can help detect rodent presence. Regularly inspect and replace traps and bait stations as needed to keep pest populations under control. Monitoring allows for early detection and intervention, preventing small issues from becoming significant infestations.

When to Call a Pest Control Specialist

There are numerous pests that can cause a disturbance at your home or business, some of which can cause serious damage. Pests may be difficult to remove on your own, or they might keep coming back every time you treat the space with over the counter bug sprays and rodent traps. Plus, some pests are simply too tough to treat on your own, such as bed bugs and termites. That’s why it’s important to call on a pest control specialist like Green Earth Remediation to solve the problem the right way, the first time around.

In some cases, the need for pest control solutions is obvious. You may see pests around your home or notice their droppings, tracks, and nests. However, sometimes the signs of a pest infestation may be more subtle. You may notice strange sounds, foul odors, damaged furniture, or physical damage to different areas of your home. In the case of fleas, you may not see the pests themselves, but you might notice skin irritation among your family and your pets if you have fleas in the home. If you suspect a pest problem but aren’t sure what the culprit is, call Green Earth Remediation for an inspection. Additionally, if you’ve seen pests like cockroaches, bed bugs, flying insects, mosquitos, or termites with your own eyes, you know it is definitely time to call a professional.

Green earth remediation is not the cheapest choice around, but they do have competitive pricing. I did a couple quotes before choosing who to contract for my radon mitigation system I got quotes that were 25-50 dollars cheaper than green earth. After looking at all the examples for the systems each company installed, I decided to go with Green Earth because they are marginally more expensive but more quality work. There mitigation systems are expertly installed and also proven to work by their post tests.

We had hired this company to handle a serious bug problem with our investment home. When I say this problem was your worst nightmare x 10 it’s no exaggeration. Chuck came out for the initial call and assessment. He was professional and knowledgeable about our bug problem and got to work once he pulled out the big guns for our issue. Chuck would continue consulting with us and return for many more applications of the products to help with the remediation. Chuck on every call, email, and home visit continues to positively helpful. We would use them again and recommend them to anyone that wants the BEST in exterminating bugs.

As a home inspector, they are my first recommendation for radon and pest mitigation. They have always been punctual, honest, and knowledgeable in their services with all my clients. I have performed several of my own radon tests on homes after Green Earth mitigation systems have been installed, and they all tested well below the EPA safe recommended guidelines. They also offer some of the most competitive pricing on both radon and pest services. Hard to recommend anyone else in the greater Grand Rapids area.

Green Earth Remediation went above and beyond to look at our 20 year old system that came with the house we purchased 8 years ago. They guys explained how the system worked, made every effort to locate all its parts and pieces and treated it with care based on its age. We did a radon test over a weekend for good measure and everything is working perfectly. They were efficient, well-versed on the system and best of all never once tried to sell me something I didn’t need. The entire company is well run, friendly and overall a bunch of local, good guys. We even moved our pest control away from big business to them we were so impressed.

Zach is like a bug whisperer! He works really hard to get to the root of the problem and doesn't just treat it at surface level. We appreciate the time he takes to fully diagnosis and treat to prevent a lot of back and forth. Highly recommend!

Why Professional Pest Control Is Important

Pest infestations are more than just a nuisance. They can pose health and safety risks, as well as cause significant structural damage to a home or commercial building. For example, termites can completely destroy a house in a matter of years or even months without proper intervention. Insects like cockroaches, bees, wasps, and fire ants can all cause allergic reactions or asthma flare-ups, and mosquitos, ticks, and rodents can carry harmful diseases that may spread to humans and pets. Therefore, managing a pest infestation quickly and effectively is critical.

Choosing professional pest control services will ensure that you aren’t risking exposure to dangerous chemicals or inadvertently damaging your property with unsafe pest control techniques. Green Earth Remediation will ensure that the job is done right, and we will follow up all pest treatments with a reinspection of the property along with maintenance visits as needed to keep the problem fully under control. Our skilled and highly trained technicians can solve the problems the other guys miss.
